Earth Day began in 1970 when an oil spill caused by a well drill by Union Oil Platform happened on the Santa Barbara Coast on January 28, 1969. It is the third-largest oil spill in U.S History, along with the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and 2010 Deepwater Horizon.
